Social Media and Healthcare: LJ7
Hi Everyone,
This past week our readings were focused on the links between healthcare and social media. We had articles that went over if social media can have positve impacts on healthcare, online healthcare and social support services, the spread of misinformation of healthcare, etc. The articles that stood out most to me were "Can Social Media Have A Positive Impact On Global Healthcare" by A. Arnold; and "Impact of Rumors or Misinformation on Coronavirus disease in Social Media by Hossain and Mazumder.
These readings did not change how I use social media however they have brought some light to things I didn't have much information on before. One thing I was surprised to read was in the article by Arnold was that millenials are ditching primary healthcare in favor of social media. Many millenials are seeking on demand support for healthcare issues via social media services and if needed they will go to urgent care clinics rather than primary doctors or ERs due to the costs. Millenials are highly focused on healthy living so to read theyre ditching primary healthcare was shocking but does make sense from a monetary standpoint.
The paper by Hossain, Tasnim, and Mazumder discussing how the spread of misinformation in healthcare and in this instance COVID-19 was masking healthy behaviors and promoting erroneous practices that increase virus spread and result in poor physical and mental health among individuals was less surprsing. With the way misinformation is spread today to learn that it is happening in healthcare and with COVID-19 was not shocking. Misinformation and false facts are a huge issue and it clearly is moving into the healthcare world as well. There needs to be more fact checking done by people individually to combat this.
Overall, I enjoyed this weeks readings as it helped me learn some new things I did not know before. Nothing I read is going to change my behavior with social media or with healthcare but I am always eager to learn about things I did not know much about. I believe healthcare and social media can be used together for the greater good.
