Social Media Rules and Thoughts: LJ1

Hi everyone,

Social media is an interesting place that over the years has evolved to be a mainstay in most everyones lives. Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing that is up to the judgment of the user. For me personally, even though I have quite a bit of social media platforms I use, I am not a fan of social media today.

I have quite a bit of "Dos" and "Don'ts" when it comes to social media. Starting with "Do's", we have following news pages, following sports pages that I am interested in, and following a few friends. I keep social media to mainly following specific sports pages and news pages I enjoy and find either entertaining or informative. This is it for my "Do" list.

My "Don't" List is pretty simple. I do not post on social media at all. My social media presence is strictly for following the news and sports pages that I have an interest in. I am not on social media to glorify my life or to show off a lifestyle. I feel doing those things is portraying something you are not or trying hard to portay your life for validation of others. This isn't always the case but that is how I feel about it. Another "Don't" that I follow is I do not troll on any pages. There is no need to be a troll online.

When I first started using social media I was young in middle school and used MySpace which is no longer around. Being a kid in middle school I posted pictures, wrote on my page, and made my page look how I wanted. Now I use Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and I still have a Facebook from highschool that I don't use too much. Now as stated in my "Do's" and "Don'ts" I just use these for my own personal information gathering and entertainment and do not post at all. If I could go back I wish I had known and realized when I was young that social media is a digital footprint and once you post it is there to stay forever, even if you delete what you posted.

As far as social media and self-expression, even though I don't use this aspect of social media I feel in most cases as I stated prior that it is to portray a lifestyle that you either do not live or need validation from others. This isn't always the case but thats how I feel about it and I do not use social media for self-expression. I do not take selfies and never will. When I was young I did this but now I do not and find them to be "interesting". An online image is exactly what the words describe, an "online image". Be yourself do not create something online you are not.

As far as rules and criterias for posting, since I do not post, I do not have any rules. I do not care what others post so I have no rules for this. Do not compare yourself to anyone else online. Be yourself.

Considering I barely use social media, it wouldn't be hard to "quit". However, I do get a lot of news and sports news from these outlets so I don't see myself deleting all of my applications anytime soon.
